As some of you may know, I bought a set of badly rusted Super Stock IIIs for $100. I pressure-washed them, then hit them with the wire wheel. What do you guys think so far?

look serviceable, they still have some rust on them. I you're going to paint ideally you'd find someone and get the tires unmounted on the cheap so you can do the prep and paint more thoroughly.

I think unmount the tires and give them a media blast. The rust in the joints is a long term issue. Then powder coat for longevity.

I'm going to hit it with evapo-rust, then coat it with rustoleum and filler primer. I don't have the monies for balancing :(

I think those are wheels. That's what I think.

I'd soak them in rust remover or get them painted with POR-15 or other similar product. They are definitely in need of some TLC.

I'm just using these in the summer, and I cant quite stretch to powder coating. What I am going to do is fill the creases with evapo-rust, then hit it with super clean, then rattle-can 'em. They were $25 each, so it's not that big of a deal if I don't media-blast them.

Yeah, that's why I'm thinking evapo-rust.

Great stuff right there, used it on the driver side seat pan from my miata, rust was completely gone after. I wound up painting it after to make sure it stayed gone.

What about using some muratic acid? That will work well at eating the rust out. Just don't let it set too long!

Same process in cleaning a fuel tank inside.

I don't want to use anything to harsh. Plus, a litre of Evapo-rust costs $11. For that money, you can't go wrong.

Take the tires off and sandblast them. Or take a wire brush to everything

Once you're ready to paint you should definitely be more aggressive with that wire wheel, probably use some sandpaper too.

I've never heard of evapo-rust, but if you put time in sanding, then a few layers of high build primer, and yet more sanding, you should be able to get a good finish even with rustoleum. One tip I've heard is that you can add a little reducer to rustoleum and that will thin it which will help hide brush strokes, though you will of course then have to apply multiple coats.

Those weights are definitely going to be a hindrance to getting a good finish, you sure you don't know someone who knows someone who works at a tire shop and would do it after hours for the price of beer?

Nope, sadly. I don't expect the end result to be perfect. I just want it to be covered under the 5/50 body work warranty - you can't see it from 5 feet away, or if moving at 50 MPH or more.

I'm taking a drill-mounted wire wheel to the rims.

I don't get that reference, and I'm not sure if I want to ask.

You need more speed. Buy an angle grinder, they are not too expensive. Drill is too slow.

An angle grinder can't get into all the nooks and crannies that a drill can. The drill has done a decent job of stripping it so far, and it only cost me for the wheel ($6).

Up to you. But I've done both and had way better results with the grinder. Maybe try both if you can.

I'll try, although I'm worried about the kick on the grinder. Being 5'5-ish and scrawny, power tools like to kick up on me.
